NEW DELHI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Indian government's attempt to get a Parliament resolution calling for peace in the northeast state of Assam failed as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) insisted on mentioning illegal immigration from Bangladesh as one of the causes of the conflict, local media reported on Friday.
The violence in Assam has split Parliament with the BJP demanding action to prevent "colonization" of the northeast by illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, while other parties criticized the BJP for "communalizing the debate" which they said was a misrepresentation of the situation.
Over 70 people have been killed in violence between the ethnic Bodo people and Muslims in Assam over the past three weeks, according to local daily The Times of India.
