Japanese Coast Guard was on “high alert” and would “intervene and prevent” Chinese activists’ possible landing on Diaoyu Islands. The coast guard will combine air and maritime forces to “avoid further tensions”. It is reported that Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force will possibly take action depending on the situation.
According to a report by Japan’s Asahi TV, once the Japanese Self-Defense Force takes any action to prevent Chinese activists from landing on Diaoyu Islands, the tensions between the two countries will dramatically escalate. A comment by Japan’s Jiji Politics warned that any operations carried out by Japanese Self-Defense Force could signify the “final conflict” between the two countries, and will lead to a spiral crisis that hard to retrieve.
In face of the increasingly tough Russia and the flaming nationalism in South Korea, it is hard for Japan to hold the situations in its own direction. As a result, Japan would has no alternative but to intensify its control over the Diaoyu Islands, which is in Japan’s actual occupation.
It is possible for Japan take the Diaoyus as an outlet of its pent-up resentment that they are right now reeling from Russia and Korea, just as Diaoyu Islands are the only disputed islands that under Japan’s control.
Also, Diaoyu Islands have long been acting as a comforter to soothe the burning Japanese nationalism.
