Russia’s Minister for the country’s Far East, Victor Ishaev has expressed hope that Japan will invest in the Pacific Kuril islands.

Ishaev, who is also the Presidential envoy in the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia, says Japan has invested a lot in Sakhalin island and other far eastern areas of Russia.

But he also notes that once Russia suggests investment in the Kuril islands, Japan will refer to the territorial disputes over them.

Russia and Japan have long argued over who owns the Kuril Islands, known as the Northern Territories by Japan.

The Russian Defense Ministry warns it will send two navy vessels to the islands between August the 25th and September the 17th.
