A group of parliamentary leaders from Korea's National Assembly will pay a visit to Korea's easternmost Dokdo islets this Tuesday afternoon, Korean media reported.

The islets, known as Takeshima in Japan, are also claimed by Japan as its own territory. The 15 lawmakers are members of the parliament's National Defense Committee.

Officials told Arirang TV that the visit had been scheduled since last month as part of a government inspection procedure.

Japan has protested the visit. Tokyo's chief cabinet secretary Osamu Fujimura on Monday called on the Korean lawmakers to cancel their trip, saying that it would negatively affect Korea-Japan relations.
