D-8 summit begins in Pakistani capital

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Summit of D-8 Countries opened in Islamabad on Thursday to consider issues relating to trade and economic cooperation among the member states, local media reported.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Nigernian President Goodluck Jonathan, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Haji Muhyiddin Mohammad Yassin, Egyptian Vice President Mahmoud Mekki and Advisor of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Dr. Syed Ali Gowher Rizvi were attending the summit.

The Nigerian president made his opening speech, who would handover the chairmanship of the group to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

The theme of the conference is "Democratic partnership for peace and prosperity."

The summit also provides an opportunity to the leaders of the participating countries to exchange views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues.
