The Japanese government decided Thursday to consider naming peaks on a pair of islets controlled by South Korea but claimed by Japan, as a countermeasure against a similar move by Seoul, Kyodo reported Thursday.

Japanese names on the islands, collectively known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, may be listed on maps created by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, according to a government document approved by the Cabinet on Thursday.

The South Korean government has named one peak on the disputed islets in the Sea of Japan Usanbong and the other Taehanbong.
