TRIPOLI, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Libya's General National Congress (GNC) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Parliamentary Union (IPU), in a bid to strengthen the new parliament and support the country's democratic drive.

Jumaa Ataigh, first deputy of Libya's GNC, who signed the document with IPU General Secretary Andres Johnson, said Libya is pleased to sign such a memorandum to consult with the IPU to train the administrative staff to learn about the ways to run the GNC sessions, and to be professional in documentation and archiving.

This cooperation is important and the GNC regards it as a vital support to the work of the first elected parliament of Libya, said Ataigh, who expressed hope to further solidify the new form of democracy in his country.

For his part, Johnson said that the IPU will provide all programs and plans to support Libya's GNC, adding that the union will respect the rule of the new Libya and appreciates the efforts made by the authority to achieve democracy.
