CAIRO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's foreign ministry condemned on Tuesday the Israeli government approval for building 800 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

"It is a new violation of international legitimacy decisions," Ahmed Hafez, spokesperson of the ministry said.

The consequences of such Israeli steps will undermine the chances of the two-state solution at a time when different international parties are exerting tireless efforts to revive the negotiations path between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, Hafez added.

He added that "such practices will result in negative repercussions on the security and stability of the region."

On Monday, Cairo hosted a quartet meeting of foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, France, and Germany for reviving the peace process in the Middle East between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

The four foreign ministers called for an immediate halt of any settlement activities including that in East Jerusalem, and urged to refrain from taking any unilateral measures that hinder the future of ending the conflict. Enditem
