DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A stray lion attacked a 32-year-old herdsman as he grazed his cattle near Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, an official said on Thursday.

Nurdin Babu, the Serengeti district commissioner in Mara region, said the herdsman was attacked by the lion on Wednesday at about 6:30 p.m. local time and has been admitted to hospital for treatment of multiple injuries.

"The herdsman was attacked by the lion as he tried to save the cattle from a herd of lions," Babu told a news conference, adding that one of the lions attacked him, injuring his left arm. The herdsman was rescued by passers-by.

John Lendoyan, a Serengeti district wildlife officer, said the lions were believed to wander away from the nearby Serengeti National Park.

He said plans were underway to mount a joint operation with other relevant authorities to control the wild animals before they inflicted further damage. Enditem
