LUSAKA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's medicine regulator on Wednesday called on people who have conventional herbal and traditional medicines for treatment or management of COVID-19 to apply for licenses.

The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) Senior Public Relations Officer Christabel Iliamupu said the agency has so far not authorized any clinical trials for marketing of conventional herbal or traditional medicines for use in the treatment and management of COVID-19.

She said in a statement that the essence of the application was to ensure the efficacy and safety of the medicines before allowing them on the market.

The applicants will also be required to apply for a clinical trial certificate authorizing them to generate the required clinical evidence supporting the use of such products.

There has been an increase in people advertising their herbal or traditional medicines for the treatment and management of COVID-19 following a surge in cases during the second wave. Enditem
