TRIPOLI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 139 bodies have been recovered from mass graves in the Libyan city of Tarhuna since June 2020, according to a local official.

Lutfi Tawfeeq, head of the Department of Search for Remains, said that the bodies were recovered from 47 mass graves in Tarhuna, located some 90 km south of the capital Tripoli.

A group of families of victims on Friday held a prayer in Tripoli for 16 newly identified bodies that had been recently recovered from Tarhuna.

Tarhuna was once the eastern-based army's main military operation center during the war against the UN-backed government in and around Tripoli.

The UN-backed government has accused the rival eastern-based army of mass killings in Tarhuna. Enditem
