MANDERA, Kenya, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least one Kenyan security officer was killed and three others injured on Wednesday evening in a roadside explosion in Mandera county, northeast region, the police confirmed on Thursday.

Rono Bunei, northeastern regional police commander said the incident happened when the vehicle in which the security officers were travelling was hit by an improvised explosive device along the Omarjillo-Arabia road.

Bunei said the explosive device had been set on the road to target the security personnel who were passing there.

"We continue to urge for cooperation from the locals to help us tame this madness. No one can explain how these bombs are set on the roads without the knowledge of locals," Bunei said on the phone.

He said those behind the incident were not found as they had escaped, adding that security personnel who arrived there soon after the explosion said they did not find anyone.

Bunei said no arrest was made but added they had deployed more personnel there to ensure stability and safety for all.

Special Forces are among personnel who have been sent to the vast area to hunt down the al-Shabab militants behind the trend.

The forces on Sunday killed two suspected al-Shabab militants and captured three others in a clash.

Security in Mandera remains volatile with the militia who cross over from their neighboring country responsible for the numerous attacks that have rocked the area.

The region has borne the brunt of grenades and gun attacks in the last several years since Kenya took its troops to Somalia to fight the al-Shabab militia group. Enditem
