MONROVIA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A senior Liberian legislator on Tuesday praised China for its assistance in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic in the West African country.

Deputy Speaker of the Liberian House of Representatives Jonathan Fonati Koffa, speaking to reporters in the capital Monrovia, commended China for what he described as "a leadership role" in supporting and working with the World Health Organization, as well as providing vaccines to African countries.

The senior legislator said Liberia acknowledges China's strive in strengthening relations with the African country.

He also recalled China's help to Liberia in 2014, when the Ebola virus ravaged the country, killing over 4,000 people.

"China has always been a true bilateral partner to Liberia in all areas," Koffa added.

An official from the Chinese embassy in Liberia told Xinhua on phone on Tuesday that so far the Chinese government has provided three batches of medical aid to Liberia to assist the country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chinese companies and communities in Liberia, responding to the call of the embassy, have also raised several rounds of cash and medical supply donations to local communities battling the virus. Enditem
