WINDHOEK, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's mining industry has managed to maintain a fatality free environment for the past seven year since 2014, because of improved safety regulations, Chamber of Mines Namibia president Zebra Kasete said Thursday.

The Namibian mining industry also remained the country's top foreign currency earner and continues to be the largest contributor to government through royalties and corporate tax, while most companies in the sector have managed to steer through the difficult times, COVID-19 inflicted serious revenue losses in the industry, said Kasete when addressing role players in the Namibian mining sector including investors, government and financiers.

He said the strong performance in the industry was spearheaded by the high demand of diamonds as well as major investments in the uranium sector which has improved direct exports to China and other parts of the world.

Kasete also told the industry players that they are in support of the proposed government empowerment legislation which seeks to negotiate locals participating in the industry more.

The chamber has 103 members affiliated to it and there are 25 mines active. Enditem
