JOHANNESBURG, April 26 (Xinhua) -- South Africa will resume innoculation with the Johson & Johson COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, the Department of Health said on Monday.
Shots using the Johson & Johson vaccine were suspended in South Africa after confirmed reports of people developing blood clots after receiving vaccination in the United States.
"Following the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority's recommendations on April 17 and the cabinet's concurrence on April 21, the vaccine rollout will resume on Wednesday April 28," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.
Over 1.1 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are ready for dispatch from the Gqeberha plant in the country.
Mkhize said the Johson & Johson vaccine is the best one in managing the 501Y.V2 variant, which is dominant in South Africa.
The minister also said that South Africa expects to receive 650,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines before May 17, when the second phase of the country's vaccination rollout is expected to begin. Enditem
