LAGOS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The governor of a northwestern state of Nigeria has ordered security agencies to crack down on informants and those supplying arms to bandits in the state.

The order was given by Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara state, said a statement issued by the spokesperson for the governor, in Gusau, the state capital on Wednesday.

The statement said by the governor's order, punitive measures to be taken would include, among others, the demolition of houses of informants, weapons suppliers and others aiding banditry activities.

The action became necessary in order to fully address the resurgence of banditry in some parts of the state, according to the statement.

"The activities of the informants are creating a lot of problems in the ongoing fight against banditry in the state," Matawalle was quoted as saying.

The governor also directed traditional rulers in the state to be vigilant and monitor the activities of landlords and tenants in their domain.

He said this would help security agents to track and arrest suspicious persons before they wreak havoc on innocent citizens.

The state of Zamfara, as well as neighboring states, has witnessed a series of gunmen attacks in recent months. There have been recurring incidents of livestock rustling and armed banditry in the northwest region of Nigeria. Enditem
