JOHANNESBURG, May 11 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's governing party, the African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday said some members facing corruption and serious criminal charges have stepped aside or been served with notices of suspension in accordance with the instruction of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution.
The ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte made the remarks while briefing the media about the NEC meeting held over the weekend.
"The NEC noted that, in line with the decisions of the NEC meeting of March 26-29, a number of ANC members had stepped aside and others had been served with notices of suspension, including ANC secretary general (SG) Ace Magashule and NEC member Bongani Bongo," said Duarte.
Magashule, after being served with notice to step aside, released a statement saying he is suspending the ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa. Duarte said the NEC instructed Magashule to apologize within this week.
"The NEC agreed that such conduct was completely unacceptable and a flagrant violation of the rules, norms and values of the ANC. If he fails to do so (apologize), the ANC will institute disciplinary procedures in accordance with the ANC Constitution. We are confident the SG will rise to the occasion and that he will follow the dictates of the ANC constitution," she said. Enditem
