TRIPOLI, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday said it has distributed relief items to internally-displaced Libyans in the eastern city of Benghazi.

"Due to long-term displacement, many Libyan families are unable to meet their basic needs of shelter, food and household items," IOM tweeted.

"IOM distributed relief items to 2,600 internally displaced persons in Benghazi, as well as hygiene kits to prevent the risk of COVID-19 transmission," said the organization.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are currently more than 245,000 Libyans displaced within their country.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled Libya's long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi, many Libyans had to flee to other cities and towns from their homes due to insecurity and armed conflicts.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah pledged earlier to secure the return of all Libyans who are displaced internally and externally.
