MANDERA, Kenya, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed in an attack in northeast Kenya's Mandera County early Monday, the police said.

Rono Bunei, northeastern regional police commander said al-Shabab gunmen killed a truck driver and his turnboy working on a road in Mandera South near the Kenya-Somalia border. They also torched the truck before they escaped toward the Kenya-Somalia border.

In another incident, the militants suspected to have crossed from neighboring Somalia attempted to hijack a van but the incident turned tragic when one of them was run over and killed by the speeding vehicle in Jabibarr area.

The police said the driver later stopped the vehicle a few kilometers ahead along Rhamu-Elwak road and escaped on foot leaving the vehicle behind in unclear circumstances.

Bunei said more security officers have been dispatched to hunt on the militants who are operating in the area and harassing motorists. Enditem
