KAMPALA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan government has called for calm following the continued closure of educational institutions in the country due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Reopening schools without sufficient vaccination of teachers and learners would be catastrophic, said Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni in a statement issued late on Monday.
If students get infected at schools, which have 15 million learners, their guardians would also be at risk.
Museveni called for patience as the government continues to vaccinate teachers, learners and vulnerable population so as to create a safety net for the whole population.
The statement followed months of calling for reopening schools, Museveni said.
On June 6, Uganda closed schools and institutions of high learning after it recorded a large number of COVID-19 cases.
Schools were also closed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but later reopened in phases. Enditem
