LAGOS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police pledged on Friday to tighten security measures on schools in the restive northwest state of Zamfara.

Ayuba Elkanah, police chief in the Zamfara state, disclosed this during his visit to some tertiary institutions in Gusau, the state's capital city, as part of the state police's measures to provide security in schools across the state.

The visit followed the prevailing security challenges and efforts to ensure the security and safety of all schools in the state, especially the tertiary institutions that are currently in session, Elkanah said.

Elkanah said the purpose of the visit is to assess the existing security arrangements in the schools with a view of adding more strategies that will guarantee the security and safety of the students and school communities.

"The visit was also to create confidence for lecturers and students in order to have a conducive atmosphere for learning," he said.

He urged the school management and the students to be security conscious at all times and report early warning signals to the police for a timely response.

The state has witnessed a series of gunmen attacks in recent months along with several other states in the northern part of the country. Enditem
