JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ahmed Kafecho, an Ethiopian national accused of trafficking 50 of his countrymen, appeared in Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The man, who was arrested last Thursday for holding 50 Ethiopians aged between 12 and 50 against their wills in Gauteng province, is being charged for human trafficking with alternative counts of attempted extortion and kidnapping, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said in a statement.

The man is alleged to demand money from the families of the men held captive in exchange for their release, NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said in the statement, adding that the case of the rescued is currently being processed by the Department of Home Affairs to determine their status in the country.
