QUITO, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health on Sunday called on the public to share responsibility for containing the COVID-19 outbreak by complying with basic protection and social distancing measures.

Heeding measures including frequent hand-washing, surface cleaning, wearing a face mask and standing two meters apart "must be the commitment of each citizen," the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry warned that failing to comply with the measures and assuming that "I will not catch it" can cause "high risks of new outbreaks."

In the past 24 hours, tests have detected 2,021 new cases of infection and 13 more patients have died from the disease in Ecuador, raising the total caseload to 161,635 and the death toll to 8,248 since the onset of the pandemic. Enditem
