6.2-magnitude quake hits offshore area of Chile

SANTIAGO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 jolted 98 km northwest of Constitucion, Chile, at 21:54 on Saturday (0054 GMT on Sunday), according to the University of Chile's Seismological Service.

The offshore earthquake occurred near costal city Constitucion in the middle region of country. The epicenter, with a depth of 20.14 km, was initially determined to be at 34.6194 degrees south latitude and 73.0759 degrees west longitude.

According to a tweet posted by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, some 10 million people might have felt the shaking, including those living in the capital Santiago.

There was no immediate report of casualties or property damage so far. The Chile water department said that the quake won't trigger tsunami.

Chile is one of the countries with the most seismic movement on the planet as its western border forms part of the Ring of Fire, a 40,000 km-long zone where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Enditem
