MEXICO CITY, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Mexico may start COVID-19 vaccinations in December if regulatory institutions certify the effectiveness of the drugs, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday.
Mexico is in contact with firms working on "highly effective projects," including China's CanSino Biologics, the U.S.' Pfizer and Britain's AstraZeneca, Ebrard said at a press conference.
Pfizer vaccine is expected to be approved on Dec. 10 by U.S. health authorities, he said.
"If ... the regulatory authority thinks that it can be approved, as we hope it will be in the United States or Europe, Mexico will also be starting its (vaccination) process in December," the minister said.
Also Tuesday, Mexico's regulatory authority, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, was set to receive from Pfizer "instructions for the vaccination process and the training method for health personnel," Ebrard said.
To date, Mexico has registered 1,049,358 COVID-19 cases with 101,926 deaths, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Enditem
