LIMA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Peruvian government incinerated more than 19 tons of illicit drugs seized by security forces from August to October of this year, an Interior Ministry official said on Monday.

The ministry's director general against organized crime, Oscar Gonzales, told state news agency Andina that most of the haul destroyed consisted of 9,132 kilos of basic cocaine paste, while the remainder included 4,249 kilos of cocaine, 5,710 kilos of marijuana, and 9 kilos of opium and other synthetic drugs.

"The commitment of the state and its authorities to combat this scourge that does so much damage to the population, even in times of pandemic, is reaffirmed," Gonzales said.

The seized drugs were incinerated at the base of the National Police of Peru's Directorate of Special Operations, located in the eastern part of the capital Lima.

The largest seizures of basic cocaine paste were made in the Amazon region known as the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, in 2019 more than 63 tons of drugs seized in various counter-narcotics operations were destroyed. Enditem
