RIO DE JANEIRO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Brazil recorded 987 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 266,398, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

Meanwhile, the country also reported 32,321 new COVID-19 cases, taking the nationwide tally to 11,051,665.

Brazil has the second highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the world, after the United States, and the third highest number of cases, behind the United States and India.

The South American country is currently experiencing another wave of COVID-19 infections, which has overwhelmed the health system in most regional capitals and forced local governments to tighten restrictive measures. Enditem
