HAVANA, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Cuba's Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday reported 1,051 new COVID-19 infections in one day, the highest number on record, as well as three more deaths, bringing the accumulated totals to 75,263 cases and 424 deaths.

The ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran noted that March has become the month with the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the country, with 24,673 cases and 100 deaths.

He also pointed out that out of the new daily cases, 1,041 were from community transmission in the country.

Havana, with 477 new cases reported, remains the epicenter of the pandemic, with an incidence rate of 316.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest on the Caribbean island.

Authorities are maintaining restrictive health measures in the capital that include limiting overnight mobility, as well as severe fines for those who do not wear masks or wear them incorrectly.

Since January, Cuba has been facing a new wave of COVID-19 infections, which has forced the re-application of measures such as the suspension of the school year and the closure of public places throughout the country.

Cuba is currently in intervention trials and Phase III trials of two vaccine candidates against COVID-19, while three other vaccine projects are in various stages of research. Enditem
