SANTIAGO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 16 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Chile since its immunization campaign began on Feb. 3, the Health Ministry reported Wednesday.

Up to 16,059,122 doses of vaccines have been administered, Health Minister Enrique Paris said in a press release, adding that 8,765,052 people have received their first dose and 7,294,070 their second.

Paris also said that 3,013,247 people aged 60 and over have been inoculated.

This week, pregnant women with underlying medical conditions and those aged 35 to 39 can be inoculated.

The target group of 15,200,840 people, which makes up 80 percent of the country's population, should be fully vaccinated by the end of the first half of the year, according to the ministry's vaccination program.

Chile saw a surge in COVID-19 cases in April, which led to the quarantine of more than 80 percent of the population. Enditem
