SANTIAGO, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chile has completed the full immunization against COVID-19 of 56.2 percent of its vaccination campaign's target population, or over 8.54 million people, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

In addition, 74 percent of the target population has received their first vaccine dose.

Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris reported that the country has administered 19,644,506 doses of the vaccine to date, toward the goal of inoculating 80 percent of the South American country's entire population in order to achieve herd immunity.

Chile is facing an increase in COVID-19 infections in the last few weeks, which has led to a rise in hospitalizations and an increase in the number of communes placed under lockdown in the country.

On Tuesday, Chile reported 5,568 new COVID-19 infections and 46 more deaths in the last day, bringing the caseload to 1,440,417 and the death toll to 30,104. Enditem
