SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out at village Chakura of Shopian district about 73 km south Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were killed today in a gunfight with joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army in Chakura village here," a senior police official posted in Shopian said. "The gunfight started in the afternoon and concluded in a brief time."

According to officials, the area had been cordoned off following specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

The government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

According to police, the identity of slain militants was being ascertained.

On Monday two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight in Srinagar city.

Last week also several deadly gunfights broke out in the region.

Gunfights between militants and government forces take place intermittently in the region.

Militant groups opposing New Delhi's rule are engaged in a guerilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Enditem
