BANGKOK, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A motorway project currently under construction on Bangkok's southwestern outskirts will be extended to a neighboring province, confirmed a senior government official on Monday.

The Department of Highways has planned to extend the motorway project between Bang Khun Thian area and Ekkachai area on Bangkok's southwestern suburbs to a neighboring Ban Phaeo area of Samut Sakhon province, said the department's Director General Sarawut Songsivilai.

The 15-km-long extension of the toll motorway will be built by a private contractor after the project is given approval from the cabinet of ministers later this year, according to the department chief.

The planned motorway extension, estimated to cost some 19 billion baht (about 607 million U.S. dollars), is primarily designed to ease traffic jams between the Thai capital's southwestern suburbs and the outlying province, he said. Enditem
