Uzbekistan launches rural development project with support of int'l donors

TASHKENT, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan will implement a 183.6-million-U.S. dollar project to develop rural infrastructure with the assistance of the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Uzbek Ministry of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction said Wednesday.

It will be implemented from 2020 to 2024 in Jizzakh, Syrdarya, Ferghana, Namangan, and Andijan to cover 21 districts and more than 300 villages in these five regions, the ministry said.

The project will be financed with a credit of 100 million dollars from the World Bank, a loan worth 82 million dollars from the AIIB and a local contribution of 1.6 million dollars from the Uzbek government, it said.

The project aims to improve the quality of basic social infrastructure facilities and services, update the local self-government system by involving the villagers in assessing their basic needs and ensure their participation in the decision-making process, it added. Enditem
