TASHKENT, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a law on state genome registration, which will come into effect in January 2023, said the country's justice ministry Thursday.

The law was approved by Senate last week, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been designated as the governing body over its implementation.

Deputies said the biological data will be used in investigating crimes and unsolved cases, searching for missing people, as well as determining the identity of unidentified corpses and kinship of people.

According to the law, citizens can register their biological data voluntarily. However, genome registration is compulsory for people suspected of serious crimes or under investigation for committing such offenses. Enditem
