40th span of Bangladesh's Padma Bridge completed amid COVID-19

DHAKA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The 40th span of the Padma Bridge, the largest in Bangladesh, has been installed, making six km of its main structure visible Friday.

Engineers of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co, Ltd (MBEC) on Friday morning successfully installed the 3,140-ton span which was placed on pillars 11 and 12 of the 6.15-km bridge in presence of the Bangladeshi and the Chinese officials.

With the installation of the 150-meter long span, six km of the bridge is now visible.

Out of the total 41 spans, only one span is now left to be installed to make the whole 6.15-km bridge visible.

According to the official, the construction of the bridge is still underway despite the country battles a growing second wave of the COVID-19, with the 39th span installed on Nov. 27.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the main works of the Padma Bridge project, the biggest of its kind in the country, in December, 2015.

The first span was installed in September, 2017.

The bridge will enhance regional trade and collaboration along the Asian highway No. 1 and the Trans-Asian railway network. Enditem
