COLOMBO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Ministry of Power plans to build the first underground electricity transmission network in the country in the southern district of Galle, state media reported here Tuesday.

Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma was quoted by state-owned Daily News as saying that the project will be implemented in cooperation with his ministry and the state-owned Lanka Electricity Company.

Alahapperuma said that 2,370 families who do not have access to electricity in the district of Galle will receive supply by the end of 2022.

He said that generation of renewable energy in the district should be promoted through the installation of solar panels and a waste-to-energy program. Enditem
