TASHKENT, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan's annual electricity consumption has reached 69.1 million megawatts in 2020, the Uzbek Energy Ministry said Friday.

Uzbekistan plans to commission nine power plants this year, which will produce additional 1,387 megawatts of power, it said.

Earlier this week, the ministry said that Uzbekistan has been importing electricity from neighboring countries to meet domestic demand amid winter power shortages.

The power plants to be commissioned in 2021 include four new thermal power plants being built by Turkish companies in the Tashkent and Bukhara regions, with a total capacity of 940 megawatts.

Also France's Total Eren and the United Arab Emirates' Masdar companies are expected to commission two solar power plants in Samarkand and Navoi regions, respectively, in October, each with a capacity of 100 megawatts, the ministry said. Enditem
