Thailand sees biggest daily spike in COVID-19 cases, India reports 9,102 new cases

HONG KONG, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as Thailand saw the biggest spike in new cases on Tuesday while Malaysia reported 3,585 new cases.

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,676,838 as 9,102 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, according to the latest data from the health ministry.

This is the first day in several months when the number of new cases registered in a day fell below the 10,000-mark.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 153,587 as 117 COVID-19 patients died since Monday morning.

There are still 177,266 active cases in the country, while 10,345,985 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment. Last week, Wednesday was the first day in nearly seven months when the number of the active COVID-19 cases in the country fell below the 200,000-mark.

Malaysia reported 3,585 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 190,434.

Eleven more deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 700.

Another 4,076 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 149,160 or 78.3 percent of all cases.

The Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines reported 1,173 new confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 516,166.

The death toll climbed to 10,386 after 94 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said. It added 18 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 475,423.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed concern over the detection of the more contagious coronavirus strain in the Philippines.

Citing dangers posed by the mutated variant first found in Britain, Duterte reimposed the stay-at-home rule for 10 to 14-year-olds in the entire country "until everybody is safe because of the vaccine."

Thailand confirmed a record daily tally of 959 cases of coronavirus infection, mostly via active testing in Samut Sakhon province, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the new cases, 937 were domestic ones and 22 others were imported cases, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said at a daily briefing.

Most of the cases in the province were found through active testing conducted with Myanmar migrants and Thai nationals, the spokesman added.

South Korea reported 354 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Monday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 75,875.

The daily caseload was down from 437 on the previous day. It stayed below 500 for nine straight days, after peaking at 1,240 on Dec. 25.

Eleven more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,371. The total fatality rate stood at 1.81 percent. Enditem
