ULAN BATOR, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia launched a COVID-19 vaccination campaign across the country on Tuesday, with frontline workers in the health and security sectors receiving the first jabs.

Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene became the first person vaccinated in the country against the COVID-19, and his jab was televised to encourage citizens to accept inoculation.

"Vaccination is 'the only way' for us to protect our health and economy from the pandemic," Oyun-Erdene said after getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Asian country plans to vaccinate at least 3.3 million people, or 60 percent of its population, with 20 percent covered by COVAX, a global initiative for equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, according to the country's health ministry.

As of Tuesday, the country has registered a total of 2,723 COVID-19 cases, with six deaths. Enditem
