SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's retail sale rose last month due to strong online shopping amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a government report showed Thursday.

The retail sale, which reflects private consumption, increased 6.1 percent in January from a year ago, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The revenue by offline retailers declined 5.8 percent last month, while the figure by online retailers advanced 22.6 percent.

Shopping in the offline stores kept sliding for the third consecutive month as people refrained from outside activity amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government tightened quarantine measures for three months through January to contain the virus spread. The daily number of COVID-19 cases remained in triple digits since Nov. 8 last year.

Revenue by convenient stores gained 2.4 percent, but those for discount outlets and department stores shrank 11.7 percent and 6.3 percent respectively. Enditem
