Death toll in Bangladesh ferry accident climbs to 34

DHAKA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of Sunday's ferry sinking in the Shitalakkhya River near Bangladesh's capital Dhaka rose to 34 on Tuesday after another five bodies were retrieved.

The bodies were recovered from the river of Shitalakkhya in Narayanganj district, about 20 km from Dhaka.

"Another five missing bodies were recovered on Tuesday," Mina Mahmuda, a senior police official in Narayanganj, told journalists.

With the recovery of the bodies, he said the death toll of Sunday's ferry sinking accident rose to 34.

Two more people are still reportedly missing.

Ershad Hossain, senior duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, had earlier told Xinhua that the passenger vessel, ML Sabit Al Hasan, carrying around some 50 passengers on board, capsized after it was hit by a cargo vessel in the river at around 6:00 p.m. local time Sunday.

Witnesses told local TV stations that the cargo vessel fled the scene after the collision.

Ferry and boat accidents are common in Bangladesh, which is crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers. Enditem
