JAKARTA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has issued a letter of prohibition on travels using land, air and water transportation means from May 6 to May 17, to curb the pandemic during the Islamic post-fasting festivity Eid al-Fitr, the Transportation Ministry said Thursday.

According to the ministry's spokesperson Adita Irawati, the policy applies to passenger cars, buses, ships and airplanes.

"This policy is enforced in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19," Irawati said.

Cases and deaths of COVID-19 used to rise sharply after long holidays.

The ban has exemption for people including those on medical services, state duties and repatriation, Irawati said.

In Indonesia, with a large Muslim population, urban residents tend to return to hometown during the Eid al-Fitr holidays. Enditem
