VIENTIANE, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Laos' National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control is currently monitoring 4,718 people across the country over COVID-19, a health official said on Thursday.

Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control under the Lao Ministry of Health, Sisavath Soutthaniraxay, told a press conference here that 4,718 people are currently in quarantine at 36 accommodation centers across Laos.

The health ministry urged related authorities countrywide to continue closely monitoring the new arrivals in the Southeast Asian country in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

People entering Laos will be sent to quarantine centers for a 14-day observation.

A total of 2,676 people entered Laos through international border checkpoints on Wednesday, and they all had their body temperatures checked and no one showed signs of fever, said Sisavath.

Sisavath has warned people and related authorities not to relax containment and prevention measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in Laos remains at 49, with 47 recoveries. Two patients are currently being under observation in the hospital based in Vientiane.

Laos confirmed its first two COVID-19 cases on March 24 last year. Enditem
