KABUL, April 9 (Xinhua) -- A total of nine Afghan border force members were recently killed in separate attacks by Taliban militants in Afghanistan's western Herat province, a local TV channel reported on Friday.

Taliban militants launched attacks on two Afghan border force outposts near the border with Iran in the Kohsan and Ghoryan districts on Thursday night, the Tolo news TV reported.

"Nine border troops were killed and over one dozen others taken hostages by the militants after both outposts fell into the Taliban's control, following the heavy overnight clashes," said the report.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes in recent years, with more violence seen in spring and summer commonly known as fighting season in Afghanistan.

In an unrelated incident, six children of a family were wounded when a sticky improvised bomb attached to a vehicle parked inside a house in Mazar-i-Sharif, capital of the northern Balkh province, was detonated on Thursday evening, according to the report.

The wounded children were transported to a regional hospital in the city, the report said. Enditem
