ULAN BATOR, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Rain, snow and snowstorms are expected to hit western and central parts of Mongolia during the first five days of May, the country's National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring said Thursday.

Meanwhile, strong winds and dust storms are expected to sweep through the Gobi desert and steppe areas in the southern and eastern parts of the country in the period, with the wind speed expected to reach 18-24 meters per second, the weather monitoring agency said, urging citizens, especially nomadic herders, to take extra precautions against possible disasters.

Strong winds, dust storms and snowstorms are common weather events during spring in Mongolia, one of the last nomadic countries in the world.

Ten people, mostly nomadic herders, and hundreds of thousands of livestock died in Mongolia due to strong winds and heavy dust storms that hit large parts of the country in mid-March. Enditem
