Japan expands emergency state to more prefectures, India's tally surpasses 24 mln with 343,144 new cases

HONG KONG, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Japan expanded its emergency state to three more prefectures in the latest developments of COVID-19 on Friday, while India's tally surpassed 24 million with 343,144 new cases.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced an expansion of a state of emergency over COVID-19 to Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures.

India's COVID-19 tally crossed 24 million, reaching 24,046,809, with 343,144 new cases registered in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said. The death toll increased to 262,317 with 4,000 more deaths since Thursday morning.

Thailand Friday reported 2,256 new cases and 30 deaths, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). Of the new infections, 2,251 were local transmissions and five others were imported cases.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 6,784 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,131,467. The death toll climbed to 18,958 after 137 more patients died from the viral disease.

The Philippines will ban international arrivals from Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting Saturday amid concerns over the new coronavirus variant first detected in India, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.

New Zealand reported no new cases of COVID-19 either in the community or in managed isolation facilities. The seven-day rolling average of new cases detected at the border is two. The total number of confirmed cases is 2,289, according to the Ministry of Health.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said 2 million people in the Southeast Asian nation have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 so far.

Cambodia's Ministry of Health (MoH) reported a daily record of 358 confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total tally to 21,499. The new infections included 350 local cases and eight imported cases.

Vietnam reported 30 new COVID-19 cases from 6 p.m. local time Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, including 29 locally transmitted and one imported, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 3,740, according to its Ministry of Health.

South Korea reported 747 more cases as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 130,380.

The daily caseload was up from 715 the previous day, staying above 700 for two days. The daily average caseload for the past week was 619. Enditem
