Speeding dumper truck mows down 4 in Indian capital

NEW DELHI, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Four people including three of a family were killed and one injured Friday after a speeding dumper truck ran over them in the Indian capital Delhi.

The accident took place in the morning at Najafgarh in southwestern Delhi.

"Today in a tragic road accident here a speeding dumper truck hit a couple and their five-year-old child. The fourth deceased person was their neighbor," a police official said. "The couple's two-and-a-half-year-old child was injured in the mishap and has been removed to hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical."

The truck also hit several vehicles parked along the roadside.

The police have arrested the dumper truck driver and the vehicle has been seized. A case has been registered and investigations are underway.

Preliminary investigations carried out by the police suggested that the accident was a case of negligent driving.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to federal road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, every day 415 people die in the country due to road accidents. Enditem
