COLOMBO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The number of people infected with the dengue fever has risen to 8,139 in Sri Lanka so far this year with the capital Colombo having the highest tally, local media reported Monday.

National Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara was quoted by the local Sunday Morning newspaper as saying that most recently, 305 confirmed dengue cases were reported and 88 of them in Colombo.

Jayasekara asked the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to help curb the spread of the dengue virus, adding that the high risk areas were being closely monitored, and special work teams had been deployed there.

According to official data, April saw the highest number of dengue cases with 1,860 infections.

Medical experts have urged the public to seek immediate medical service if they suffer high fever, uncontrolled vomiting, abdominal pain, or dizziness among other symptoms of the dengue fever. Enditem
