India's COVID-19 tally close to 30 mln as daily new cases below 50,000

NEW DELHI, June 22 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 29,977,861 Tuesday, with 42,640 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, said the federal health ministry.

This was the first time that less than 50,000 daily cases were reported in a day after 91 days, according to the ministry.

"Daily recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases for the 40th consecutive day," said the ministry.

Besides, 1,167 COVID-19 deaths have been recorded since Monday morning, taking the country's death toll to 389,302.

Daily COVID-19 cases peaked to over 400,000 for several days in April-May in India.

Still there are 662,521 active cases, after a decrease of 40,366 active cases during the past 24 hours. The country's active caseload fell below 700,000 after 79 days, according to the ministry.

A total of 28,926,038 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals across the country, with 81,839 of them discharged since Monday morning.

Delhi, which has been one of the worst-hit COVID-19 hotspots in India since last year and witnessed over 28,000 cases for several days in April-May this year, recorded 89 new pandemic cases and 11 deaths through Monday. Enditem
