Malaysia's daily COVID-19 cases exceed 10,000, Indonesia logs record high new infections

HONG KONG, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as Malaysia and Indonesia both reported record high daily cases.

Malaysia reported 11,079 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 855,949, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Another 125 deaths were reported, pushing the death toll to 6,385.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah warned in a press conference that fresh infections are expected to surge in the coming weeks as more infectious new variants are spreading, and increased testing is being done in hard-hit areas like the Klang Valley area, encompassing the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and part of the adjacent Selangor state, where more than half of Tuesday's cases were reported.

Indonesia recorded 47,899 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 2,615,529, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry also reported that the COVID-19-related death toll added by 864 to 68,219.

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 30,907,282 as 32,906 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, 2,020 more deaths took the total death toll to 410,784, a steep rise in 24 hours as only 724 new fatalities were reported on Monday.

There are still 432,778 active COVID-19 cases in the country, a decrease of 18,121 during the past 24 hours.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,604 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,481,660.

The death toll climbed to 26,092 after 77 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

Tuesday's caseload is the lowest since May 23. The DOH said seven testing laboratories were not able to submit data.

Sri Lanka's health authorities administered the highest number of vaccines in a single day on Monday with 232,526 people jabbed, the Health Ministry was quoted by local media reports as saying Tuesday.

The country has to date recorded 276,106 patients since the first local patient was detected in March last year while 3,533 deaths have been reported.

Pakistan on Monday reported 1,590 new COVID-19 cases, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) announced Tuesday.

The NCOC said that the country's number of overall confirmed cases has risen to 976,867, including 914,605 recoveries. The number of active cases has risen to 39,644, including 2,181 in critical condition.

According to the NCOC, the pandemic killed 21 people on Monday, taking the overall death toll to 22,618.

Asad Umar, head of the NCOC, said in a tweet on Tuesday that for the first time, more than half a million of vaccine doses were administered in a single day on Monday in Pakistan, with a total amount of 525,000 doses.

South Korea reported a total of 252 "breakthrough" COVID-19 infections, which refer to people who were infected after having been fully vaccinated, the health authorities said.

In the latest tally, South Korea reported 1,150 more cases of COVID-19 for the past 24 hours, lifting the total number of infections to 170,296. The daily caseload stayed above 1,000 for seven days in a row.

Two more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 2,046. The fatality rate stood at 1.20 percent.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that 5 million people in the Southeast Asian nation have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine so far.

The country reported 830 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the national total caseload to 62,700, the health ministry said, adding that 28 new fatalities were reported, taking the overall death toll to 953. Enditem
